Gangwon Gubernatorial Race Heats Up with Candidate Declarations Amidst Controversy

The race for the Gangwon governorship and superintendent of education has officially kicked off with incumbent Governor Kim Jin-tae and Superintendent Shin Kyung-ho both registering as preliminary candidates on the same day. Governor Kim, seeking a second term, made his official announcement, highlighting his lifelong connection to Gangwon Province and his dedication to seeing through the ambitious industrial development projects he initiated.

I was born and raised in Gangwon, and even as a prosecutor, I never forgot Gangwon, working in Chuncheon and Wonju. I experienced the pain of losing twice as a member of the National Assembly in Chuncheon, but I did not leave my hometown out of loyalty to Gangwon.

Kim's campaign narrative centers on his deep understanding of Gangwon, having been born, raised, and served as a prosecutor and national assembly member in the region. He stressed that the ongoing transformation of Gangwon from a primarily agricultural province to a hub for advanced industries requires a leader who knows the region intimately to ensure its successful completion. Candidate Kim Jin-tae's main point of differentiation from me is only that he has lived in Gangwon for a long time and knows Gangwon well, which is disappointing. The citizens are not asking 'Who knows Gangwon better?' but 'Who is the right person to develop Gangwon?' He needs to answer this.

In contrast, Woo Sang-ho, the preliminary candidate for the Democratic Party, expressed disappointment with Kim's campaign focus. Woo argued that while regional familiarity is important, the electorate is more concerned with who possesses the vision and capability to drive Gangwon's development. He positioned himself as a candidate with the ability to leverage national resources and policy expertise to address the province's pressing issues, differentiating himself from Kim's more localized approach.
