Garda Drone Unit Deploys for First Time in West Dublin Seizure of Illegal E-Scooters

Gardaí in West Dublin have seized multiple illegal vehicles, including 11 e-scooters, two e-bikes, and a scrambler, as part of an operation to combat dangerous driving. The operation, led by the Dublin Crime Response Team, also resulted in the arrest of a man and a teenager.

In a significant development, a drone from the newly established Garda Drone Unit was deployed for its first operational use. The drone was instrumental in identifying and tracking individuals operating e-scooters, leading to one arrest when a person was followed back to their home. Other individuals abandoned their vehicles and fled from officers.

The seized vehicles were part of Garda Operation Meacán, which aims to tackle the illegal use of electric motorbikes, e-scooters, and e-bikes in public areas. Authorities highlighted that these vehicles are not only used dangerously but are also implicated in criminal activities such as drug distribution, money laundering, and the transportation of firearms.

The arrested man has been released on bail pending a court appearance, while the teenage offender is being referred to the Garda National Youth Diversion Bureau. This operation underscores the growing concerns surrounding the misuse of e-scooters and similar devices on public roads and their potential links to wider criminal networks.
