Garut Regent Pledges Road Repairs After 11-Year Damage Sparks Protest

Garut Regent Abdusy Syakur Amin has pledged to accelerate repairs for the Banjarwangi road in Singajaya, Cipendeuy, after residents staged a protest over its 11-year state of disrepair. The agreement was reached following a meeting between the regent, the Garut Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD), and residents representing the Banjarwangi, Singajaya, Pendeuy Community Movement.

"We discussed, and the discussion was very warm, tough, and everyone shared their hopes. In the end, we agreed that for the short term, we will help complete it so the road is more layak (worthy/suitable) to pass," Syakur Amin stated. He expressed hope that faster road repairs would prevent accidents.

The local government plans to patch several damaged sections. Additionally, the Garut Regency government is pushing for the realization of the 6.5-kilometer Inpres Jalan Daerah (Regional Road Presidential Instruction) program. A budget of 2.5 billion rupiah has been allocated for 2026, with a commitment to finish the entire route to Peundeuy by 2027.

Syakur Amin noted a shift in priorities, stating, "We used to think we wanted a national-quality road, but from the community's aspirations, it seems they want it repaired quickly, in a condition that doesn't have to be a very good road, just layak (suitable)." The budgeting and route finalization are scheduled for the budget determination in October.
