Gas explosion destroys Beitou restaurant; cause under investigation

A restaurant constructed from tin sheets in Taipei's Beitou district was devastated by a suspected gas explosion late Tuesday night. The incident occurred in an alleyway off Central North Road, Section 3, prompting a swift response from emergency services.

Firefighters arrived at the scene shortly after the alarm was raised at 10:39 p.m. While the fire itself was no longer active by the time they arrived, debris, including glass fragments, was scattered across the road. Police secured the area, managing traffic and assisting the fire department in their operations.

The building, a two-story structure, reportedly caught fire on the first floor. The restaurant's kitchen equipment, including the exhaust hood and stove, sustained significant damage. The fire spread rapidly, engulfing approximately 5 square meters of the establishment.

Initial investigations suggest that a gas leak may have led to the explosion. Fortunately, the incident resulted in no injuries. Firefighters worked diligently through the night, completing safety measures and clearing the surrounding roads by 12:40 a.m. Wednesday. The precise cause of the fire is now the subject of a detailed investigation by the fire department's arson and forensics unit.

Authorities reminded restaurant operators of the high-risk nature of kitchen environments and urged regular cleaning and maintenance of equipment. They also advised the public to cooperate with emergency personnel during fire incidents and avoid lingering at accident sites to ensure safety.
