Gasly From Another Planet at Monza: First Pole of His Career Is Here

Pierre Gasly answered the disappointment of losing his Monaco podium in spectacular fashion at Monza. One day after being punished for what happened in that race, the Alpine driver produced an extraordinary final lap in Q3 and claimed the first pole position of his career.

Gasly's time surprised the entire paddock and put him ahead of George Russell, who had been considered the favorite. Oscar Piastri completed the top three with a time of 1:21.966.

The result gave Gasly a remarkable comeback at the circuit where he also earned his only Formula One victory, in 2020. After eight years in Formula One, he finally secured pole position, prompting a jubilant reaction from Alpine.

Ferrari filled the next two places, with Charles Leclerc fourth and Lewis Hamilton fifth, to the delight of the tifosi. Max Verstappen qualified sixth and again complained over team radio about Red Bull's performance. Kimi Antonelli set the seventh-fastest time, but an engine-change penalty means he will start from the back.

Franco Colapinto benefited from Antonelli's penalty to take eighth and give Alpine two cars in the top 10. Lando Norris had a disappointing session in ninth, while Racing Bulls driver Arvid Lindblad continued his strong qualifying form in 10th.
