Gaza forgotten amid regional conflict, resident laments

Palestinians in Gaza feel abandoned by the international community, with one resident lamenting that the world has forgotten the territory's plight amid the escalating Middle East conflict. "Ever since the United States went to war with Iran, the whole world has forgotten Gaza and its tragedy. We no longer have anyone standing by us," said Ahmed Jamali, 53, from a displacement camp in Gaza. He criticized Israel's actions, stating, "We are weak and oppressed, and Israel is doing whatever it wants: killing, destroying and occupying Gaza, while no one in the world lifts a finger." The Gaza war, triggered by Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, has evolved into a wider regional conflict. This escalation involved Iran-backed groups like Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen, eventually drawing in Iran itself. The conflict has led to a severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with a fragile ceasefire in place since October 2025. However, efforts to achieve a lasting peace have stalled. Analysts suggest a shift in regional priorities, noting that preliminary peace texts between Tehran and Washington no longer mention Gaza. Hugh Lovatt of the European Council on Foreign Relations believes this reflects Hamas's declining strategic importance to Iran. While Iran has historically supported Hamas, the October 2023 attack appears to have strained that relationship. Israeli military expert Eado Hecht commented that Iran might not have desired the war at that time, viewing Hamas as an ally rather than a direct tool. Michael Milshtein, another Israeli analyst, suggests Tehran's focus has shifted to preserving Hezbollah's role in the regional balance.
