Gaza: Israeli army opens investigation into death of five-year-old Hind Rajab

The Israeli military announced on Wednesday that it has opened a criminal investigation into the death of 5-year-old Hind Rajab, who was killed in Gaza in 2024. Hind Rajab's body was discovered in a car riddled with bullets in Gaza. Her death occurred several days after she was heard during a prolonged and desperate phone call with the Palestinian Red Crescent on January 29, 2024, pleading for assistance. At the request of the Chief of Staff, the Military Advocate General has decided to open a criminal investigation into the incident in which Hind Rajab, a five-year-old girl, was killed.

The army stated that "following the review of the (preliminary investigation) findings and due to alleged failures in the coordination of the Palestinian Red Crescent ambulance's movement, it was decided to open a criminal investigation into this incident." This indicates that the investigation will focus, in part, on the operational procedures and coordination efforts surrounding the attempted rescue.

The announcement comes after the publication of preliminary findings regarding several incidents. The investigation into Hind Rajab's death is part of a broader review of actions taken during the conflict in Gaza. The findings of the criminal investigation are expected to provide further clarity on the events leading to the child's death.
