Gaza's Hamas government dissolves to hand over control to technocratic committee

The Hamas-led government in the Gaza Strip has announced its dissolution, a significant step intended to transfer administrative authority to a US-brokered technocratic committee. This decision, made public through a press conference in Deir al Balah, marks an effort to comply with the terms of a ceasefire agreement and pave the way for a new governing body.

Ismail al Thawabta, director of the Hamas government's media office, stated that the "Emergency Committee," established after the October 7, 2023 attacks, has been dissolved. Muhammad Abdul Jaliq al Farra, who was serving as the interim head of this committee, has submitted his resignation. The Gaza government issued a statement affirming its "unwavering commitment to principles" and its translation into "concrete actions and strategic measures" to facilitate the handover.

The newly formed National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG), comprised of Palestinian technocrats, is designated to take over the enclave's administration. However, Israel has not yet permitted the committee's entry into Gaza. The Hamas government's statement indicated that preparations for this transfer have been completed, and only "technical and professional staff" will remain in their positions to ensure the uninterrupted provision of essential services to the Palestinian population.

The statement from the Gaza government urged all relevant parties to expedite the NCAG's entry and allow it to assume its responsibilities, emphasizing the need to "strengthen our people's resilience and heal their wounds."
