Gediminas Gelgotas and NIKO music to sound on UNESCO-protected Curonian Spit

The unique natural and cultural landscape of the Curonian Spit, a UNESCO World Heritage site, will resonate with the music of Gediminas Gelgotas and NIKO during a series of concerts. This narrow sand peninsula, where the Baltic Sea meets the Curonian Lagoon, is renowned for its wind-shaped dunes, traditional fishing villages, and colorful weather vanes.

Gediminas Gelgotas explained that fragments from his work "Rekompozicijos" were chosen for these performances because the music emerged from deep introspection, silence, space, and inner transformation. He believes the Curonian Spit, with its constant dialogue of wind, water, and silence, imbues this music with an even deeper meaning, aligning closely with the creative concept.

For these concerts, I chose to perform fragments of 'Rekompozicijos' because this music was born from intense inner listening – silence, space, and inner transformations. On the Curonian Spit, this music gains another meaning – here you constantly feel the dialogue of wind, water, and silence, which is very close to the idea of creation itself.

The concert series aims to encourage people to rediscover Lithuania's national parks, areas that preserve not only exceptional nature but also the heritage of different ethnographic regions. Agnė Jasinavičiūtė-Trakimienė, director of the State Service for Protected Areas, highlighted the Curonian Spit as one of Lithuania's most unique protected territories, where humans have learned to live in a sensitive environment for centuries.

"We want people to get to know it not only by walking the nature trails but also by experiencing it through music, to stop, listen, and once again appreciate the unique places we have in Lithuania," Jasinavičiūtė-Trakimienė stated. The first concert is scheduled for August 20th at 7 p.m. in the courtyard of the Curonian Spit National Park Visitor Center in Neringa. The events are free and open to all, with advance registration recommended.
