Gender Gap in Refugee Employment: Unemployment Falls for Men, Rises for Women

Recent labor market statistics in Austria reveal a concerning disparity in employment trends among refugees, with men experiencing a significant decrease in unemployment while women face an increase.

Overall, the number of registered unemployed refugees and individuals with subsidiary protection has dropped considerably. As of June this year, approximately 37,000 refugees were unemployed, down from around 44,000 in mid-2025. This reduction, however, is largely attributed to the improved employment situation for men.

Male refugees saw a substantial 16.6% decrease in unemployment compared to the previous year. This positive development suggests successful integration into the workforce for this demographic.

In stark contrast, the data indicates a slight but notable rise in unemployment among female refugees, with an increase of 0.6% over the same period. This trend highlights potential barriers or challenges faced by women in accessing employment opportunities within Austria.

The figures, compiled by the Austrian Integration Fund, underscore the need for targeted policies and support systems to address the differing employment trajectories of male and female refugees, ensuring more equitable integration into the Austrian labor market.
