Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has dismissed the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, bowing to public pressure after days of demonstrations. The move marks a significant leadership change amid the ongoing conflict. Mykhailo Drapatyi, who previously commanded a tank unit that breached a barricade in Mariupol in 2014, will take over the military's top post. This appointment signals a potential pivot towards innovation in Ukraine's war strategy. The dismissal follows a leadership dispute between Syrskyi and Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who advocated for faster military reforms. Critics described Syrskyi, born in Soviet Russia, as a proponent of old-school tactics leading to high casualties, earning him the nickname "butcher." Fedorov accused Syrskyi of obstructing necessary reforms and pressuring commanders who supported them. Despite the criticism, Syrskyi's role in defending Kyiv and leading counteroffensives in Kharkiv and Kursk was acknowledged.
