General Tchemo's Departure: Opportunity or Void at the Top of the Army?

Cameroon's military leadership is facing scrutiny following the retirement of Major General Hector Marie Tchemo, the second-in-command at the Army General Staff. The presidential decree, announced on July 28, 2026, admitted Tchemo into the second section of military service, a move that has sparked debate regarding its timing and implications.

General Tchemo's departure is particularly noteworthy because the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces (CEMA) has reportedly been unwell and absent from recent official defense ministry ceremonies. In the CEMA's absence, General Tchemo has effectively been leading the military's day-to-day operations and representing the institution. His retirement at this juncture raises concerns about a potential leadership vacuum.

The role of the Major General is crucial; as the number two officer, he coordinates administration, oversees daily operations, and acts as the CEMA's representative. His departure creates uncertainty about who will assume these responsibilities, especially with the CEMA's own unavailability.
