Generational shift: Drapatyj to lead Ukrainian army

Major General Mykhailo Drapatyj, a 43-year-old decorated soldier, has been appointed the new commander of Ukraine's armed forces, tasked with leading the fight against the Russian invasion. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made the decision after days of public pressure and protests, dismissing the previous commander, 60-year-old Oleksandr Syrskyi.

In a video address from Kyiv, Zelenskyy announced a restructuring of the General Staff in coordination with the Ministry of Defense and the Presidential Office. Drapatyj, who has served in the military for 25 years, expressed his commitment on Facebook: "I will work responsibly, with focus, and with respect for the people who are defending our country today."

The change in military leadership came after widespread protests in various Ukrainian cities. These demonstrations were initially sparked by the dismissal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, 35, who had been instrumental in advancing the technological capabilities of the Ukrainian army, particularly in drone warfare, over the past six months.

Reports indicated ongoing conflicts between Fedorov and Syrskyi, an "old-school" commander trained during the Soviet era. Protesters viewed Fedorov as representing a more modern approach to warfare, prioritizing technology over the attrition of soldiers, a resource Ukraine is reportedly short on.

Following extensive consultations with numerous commanders, President Zelenskyy met again with Fedorov on Tuesday evening. The president announced that Fedorov would be given a "worthy position" to continue his work on Ukraine's technological development, though specific details were not provided.

Drapatyj, popular among the public, becomes the third commander of the Ukrainian army in nearly four and a half years of the Russian war. He gained recognition in 2014 as a major when he led an armored personnel carrier through a pro-Russian checkpoint in Mariupol, helping to defend the port city at that time. In 2024, as commander, he helped limit the Russian advance into the Kharkiv region. He later became commander of the Ukrainian Ground Forces but resigned in 2025 after 12 soldiers were killed in a Russian Iskander missile strike on a training unit. He took responsibility, stating that soldiers were not adequately protected within the army. Most recently, Drapatyj commanded an army group responsible for defending the Kharkiv region.
