Genesis' First Hybrid, the GV80, to Launch Next Month

Genesis is set to launch its first-ever hybrid model, the GV80 Hybrid, next month, aiming to blend the quietness of electric vehicles with the performance of a gasoline engine. The brand unveiled the new 2.5 turbo hybrid system, which utilizes a parallel structure with both an engine and two motors for power generation and driving.

The system is engineered to prioritize electric motor use at low speeds, up to approximately 30 km/h (19 mph), significantly reducing engine intervention for a quieter driving experience in urban environments like parking garages or traffic. This focus on electric-like quietness is a key feature Genesis is highlighting for the new model.

Acceleration is also refined, with the system designed to provide smooth, consistent power delivery. When rapid acceleration is needed, the engine engages quickly. Genesis claims the GV80 Hybrid can achieve a 100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration in approximately 7.1 seconds, about 18% faster than the 2.5 turbo gasoline model when regaining speed.

A notable technological advancement is the introduction of a water-cooled battery system, a first for Hyundai Motor Group's hybrid systems. This system offers more stable temperature management, allowing the motor to supply more power when needed, contributing to both the low-speed quietness and smooth acceleration. The GV80 Hybrid will also feature enhanced power output, totaling 352 horsepower, and a projected fuel efficiency improvement of over 25% compared to its gasoline counterpart.
