Geopolitical Tensions and Good Weather Create Market Volatility

Geopolitical tensions, notably the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the standoff between Iran and the United States, are significantly disrupting global markets. These challenges, alongside supply chain disruptions in the Black Sea region and tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, have driven up oil prices. However, prices stabilized around $87-88 per barrel by the weekend.

Simultaneously, positive weather forecasts are providing relief to the market, contributing to falling commodity prices. Rapeseed prices on the MATIF exchange have dropped by 6.7% in the past two weeks, while wheat prices have seen a nearly 3% decrease. The wheat market is experiencing a tug-of-war between geopolitical tensions that fuel price increases and consumer demand alongside favorable weather conditions that promote price drops.

The dynamics of grain and other markets are further influenced by weather patterns, the impact of the El Niño phenomenon, and the pace of harvests across the EU, US, and Black Sea regions.
