German actor Andreas Hoppe, known for 'Tatort,' dies at 66

Andreas Hoppe, the beloved German actor who brought Detective Mario Kopper to life for over two decades, has died at the age of 66. His family confirmed his unexpected passing on August 17.

Hoppe was a familiar face on German television from 1996 to 2018, appearing in 57 episodes of the popular crime series "Tatort." He played the role of Kopper, a detective from Ludwigshafen, alongside Ulrike Folkerts, who portrayed Lena Odenthal.

Folkerts shared her profound grief, stating, "I am deeply shocked that my colleague and friend Andi has passed away. We are connected not only by 21 years of 'Tatort' Ludwigshafen, Lena and Kopper, but we knew each other from 1982 to 1986, as we were at the same acting school, in the same acting class, and dared to take our first steps towards the stage together." She added, "Andi, that was far too soon, you were such a special guy! My deepest sympathy to all those who were close to you recently! Ciao Kopper."

Hoppe's character, Kopper, was known for his Italian roots, love of cooking, and a cozy aspect he brought to the series. The SWR's Intendant Kai Gniffke described Hoppe as approachable and credible, always with "the right heart in the right place." Gniffke lamented, "We are dismayed that such a great actor and artist has left us so soon."

Beyond "Tatort," Hoppe had a diverse acting career, appearing in films like "Esperanza" and miniseries such as "Die Triffids - Pflanzen des Schreckens." He also featured in television series like "Das Traumschiff" and "Rosamunde Pilcher." Hoppe also authored a cookbook about Sicily and a book exploring regional food, reflecting his personal passion for good food and nutrition.
