German fuel prices surge, diesel sees sharpest rise

Fuel prices in Germany are climbing steeply, with diesel experiencing a particularly sharp increase, according to the ADAC. A liter of diesel averaged 2.200 euros on Tuesday, a rise of 3.8 cents from Sunday. Gasoline prices also climbed, with E10 costing 2.125 euros, up 3 cents. Early figures on Wednesday indicated further significant price increases. By 8 a.m., diesel was 5.7 cents more expensive than the previous day at the same time, and E10 rose by 2.6 cents. The ADAC attributes the recent surge to rising oil prices, stating that "the price level has been too high for weeks in our view." Adding to the cost pressures, drought conditions in parts of Germany are impacting fuel prices. The Rhine River, a crucial transport route for oil and fuel via tankers, is experiencing critically low water levels. This restriction increases logistics costs, which are reflected in regional price disparities. "Tankerkönig" data shows that fuel was above average in North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse, and Rhineland-Palatinate on Wednesday morning, while Bavaria and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern had comparatively lower prices.
