German government emphasizes support for Ukraine ahead of NATO summit

Germany has strongly reiterated its unwavering support for Ukraine in the face of Russia's ongoing aggression. The German government stated it will continue to back Ukraine decisively and, in coordination with its partners, will intensify pressure on Russia. This message was conveyed following a meeting of Germany's National Security Council, chaired by Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

The council, comprising eight key ministers including those responsible for Defense, Foreign Affairs, Interior, Finance, Economy, and Justice, convened to discuss the war in Ukraine. The government's official statement underscored its commitment to pursuing serious negotiations aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace. Germany explicitly supports Ukraine's initiative to engage in direct talks with Russia, with the participation of European nations and the United States.

In addition to addressing the conflict in Ukraine, the National Security Council's agenda also included discussions on broader security matters such as "comprehensive defense" and the role of "artificial intelligence." The Chancellery spokesperson, Stefan Kornelius, issued the statement, confirming the government's unified position on these critical issues ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara.
