German Intelligence Agency BND Recruits at Gaming Convention

The German Federal Intelligence Service (BND) is making a notable push for new recruits at Gamescom, Europe's largest gaming event. The agency has set up a booth to attract young talent, particularly those with IT skills, by showcasing its work in an unconventional way: through a computer game.

The game, titled 'BND Legends: Operation Blackbox,' allows players to step into the role of Agent AJ on secret missions in virtual worlds. This upgraded version, featuring a new 'Data Extraction' level, challenges players to quickly recognize patterns and react under pressure, mirroring the concentration required in real intelligence operations. Visitors can also test their hacking and coding abilities in short game sequences and engage with BND personnel.

A BND spokesperson stated that the agency is pleased with the game's reception among gamers, appreciating that the service is presenting itself through an interactive medium. The decision to have a 100-square-meter booth at a gaming convention stems from recognizing the Gamescom audience as a valuable potential talent pool. The spokesperson highlighted that gamers often possess the technical aptitude, enjoy adopting different roles, and are drawn to missions, qualities that align well with the BND's operational needs.

The BND, which employs around 6,800 people with its headquarters in Berlin and a major site in Pullach, is seeking to boost its workforce, especially in areas like Artificial Intelligence applications and software development. This recruitment drive is taking place against the backdrop of a recent legal reform that grants the BND expanded powers for intelligence gathering on terrorism and foreign state activities, including the ability to actively intervene in cyber threats.
