German Police Investigate Sabotage Attempt on Power Facility as Terrorism

German police are investigating an attempted attack on an electrical facility in Brandenburg as a possible act of terrorism. Officers from Potsdam were collecting evidence at the site, police said in a statement issued a day after the incident.

The affected substation stands near the Jänschwalde lignite power station in eastern Germany, the country’s fourth-largest. Investigators found around half a dozen objects resembling rockets, each containing explosives.

Brandenburg Interior Minister Jan Redmann told the state parliament’s Interior Committee that the region had been fortunate because the incident did not cause a power outage. Police said they would not release further information for now, citing the need to protect the investigation.

Redmann said it was still unclear who stood behind the attack. He noted that far-left groups had carried out attacks on electrical facilities in the past, but said authorities could not exclude an action by foreign powers or actors they do not yet know.
