German police launch operation over suspicious object at Lower Saxony power substation

Police sealed off a large area around a power substation in Ganderkesee, near Bremen, on Friday morning after an object was found on the site. A helicopter circled above the transformer station while special forces inspected the area.

Authorities initially referred to “suspicious circumstances.” They later said the object did not pose an immediate danger. Police spokeswoman Ronja Weser said, “An object was found that the police must investigate.”

Police did not say what had been discovered or whether the substation had suffered damage. They confirmed, however, that the latest information showed there had been no fire. The operation was continuing.

The response came after a series of incidents involving energy facilities in Germany. A passerby found another suspicious object near a power substation in Dormagen, between Cologne and Düsseldorf, where police suspect an attempted act of sabotage. Two days earlier, an incident occurred at a substation in Bergheim, west of Cologne. Authorities also reported an attempt to damage a power plant in Brandenburg.
