German team leader: Wildfire in Deliblatska Peščara is difficult due to terrain, vegetation, and wind

A German firefighting contingent is lending crucial support to Serbian efforts to extinguish a wildfire raging in Deliblatska Peščara, a protected sandy nature reserve. Simon Fritz, the leader of the German fire-rescue team, described the situation as "very difficult" due to the challenging combination of sandy terrain, dense vegetation, and strong winds.

The German module, comprising 56 firefighters and 24 vehicles, arrived Monday morning after activating the European Union's Civil Protection Mechanism. They immediately joined Serbian firefighters in tackling the blaze. Fritz specifically commended the Serbian firefighters for their "outstanding work" despite the arduous conditions.

We arrived on Monday morning with the German module of firefighters with vehicles after activating the European Union's Civil Protection Mechanism. Immediately after arriving, we started working together with our colleagues from the Serbian fire-rescue unit on suppressing and extinguishing the fire.

Currently, the German ground forces are operating in the Čardak area within the reserve. Meanwhile, 69 Romanian firefighters with 15 vehicles are deployed in the Grebenac area, also battling the flames. The Ministry of Internal Affairs highlighted the ongoing efforts of these international teams working alongside their Serbian counterparts.
