German woman dies after 60-metre fall during family hike in Austria

A 75-year-old woman from Hesse fell about 60 metres down a steep, rocky slope during a family hike in the Tyrolean Alps and later died from her injuries.

The woman, from the Groß-Gerau district, was hiking with her family in the Geigenkamm mountain range in the Ötztal Alps. The group had been walking along a level path at an altitude of about 2,055 metres before the route led down across a terrain step.

Police believe she lost her footing on wet ground while crossing the step. She fell onto a hiking trail below. Her husband immediately alerted rescue services, and family members gave her first aid.

An emergency doctor treated her at the scene before a helicopter flew her to the valley. Police said she died despite the swift rescue response.
