Germany: Blue-green algae and cercariae warnings issued for bathing waters

German authorities have issued warnings concerning elevated levels of blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, in several popular bathing waters across Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The presence of these potentially harmful microorganisms has prompted advisories for swimmers and pet owners.

Cyanobacteria can pose a health risk, especially for immunocompromised individuals and those with pre-existing conditions, pregnant women, and young children.

The district of Vorpommern-Greifswald reported the detection of cyanobacteria at the Peenestrom bathing area near Usedom. Similar findings were recorded in numerous lakes within the Rostock and Mecklenburgische Seenplatte districts, including Grambzower See, Rühner See, Lütt See, Horster See, Langer See, Kuhlensee, Boitiner See, and Wanzkaer See. Authorities are placing warning signs at affected locations.

Cyanobacteria can pose health risks, particularly to individuals with weakened immune systems, pre-existing conditions, pregnant women, and young children. Skin contact may lead to irritation and allergic reactions, and animals are also at risk. The algae blooms are a seasonal phenomenon influenced by wind and weather, meaning conditions can change rapidly. Officials advise avoiding areas with visible blooms and keeping children away from shorelines.

Swimming in areas with visible cyanobacteria development should be avoided. Children should also not play in the wash-up areas.

In addition to blue-green algae, warnings have been issued for cercariae in some bathing waters, notably in the shallow areas of Schwerin lakes. These are larval forms of flukes that can penetrate human skin, causing itchy rashes. While not considered a serious health threat, as they are killed by drying, swimmers are advised to limit time in shallow, reedy areas, shower after swimming, and dry off thoroughly. The presence of cercariae is linked to the current warm temperatures.

Especially in shallow zones with reed belts, one should not stay for extended periods and should limit oneself to swimming in deeper areas.
