Germany Braces for Heatwave: Temperatures to Rise Mid-Week

Germany is bracing for a significant heatwave set to begin mid-week, with forecasters predicting a substantial rise in temperatures across the country. The German Weather Service (DWD) anticipates high pressure building from the southwest starting Wednesday, bringing increasing warmth that is expected to last into the following week.

From Wednesday, high pressure will establish itself from the southwest and increasing warmth will prevail.

While the early part of the week may see thunderstorms, particularly in the west and moving eastward, the latter half promises summery conditions. Maximum temperatures in the north are expected to range between 18 and 23 degrees Celsius, while other regions could see highs between 24 and 30 degrees. The Upper Rhine region might even reach up to 33 degrees Celsius.

Very locally, especially on Tuesday afternoon and evening over the center and partly in the east, severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours up to 30 liters per square meter cannot be ruled out.

The DWD warns that the initial thunderstorms could be severe, with the potential for heavy rain (up to 20 liters per square meter per hour), hail, and strong gusts of wind, especially in central and eastern areas on Tuesday afternoon and evening. However, the focus shifts to sustained heat from Wednesday onwards.

Tropical nights can be expected in some places towards the weekend.

By Thursday, temperatures could climb as high as 36 degrees Celsius in the Upper Rhine area. Even cooler northern regions will experience high summer temperatures, with coastal areas seeing 19 to 24 degrees. As the week progresses towards the weekend, some locations may experience "tropical nights," where overnight temperatures fail to dip below 20 degrees Celsius, particularly in larger cities in western and southwestern Germany. Increased humidity is also expected from Friday, potentially bringing more thunderstorms.
