Germany: DWD Warns of Muggy Heat and Severe Thunderstorms

Residents in parts of North Rhine-Westphalia are bracing for severe weather as the German Weather Service (DWD) has issued warnings for thunderstorms, heavy rain, and potential hail starting Friday afternoon. The forecast indicates that some areas could experience stormy gusts and small-grain hail by the evening.

On parts of North Rhine-Westphalia, according to the German Weather Service, strong thunderstorms and heavy rain could approach from this afternoon.

The DWD warns of isolated severe weather events, with the possibility of intense heavy rainfall reaching up to 35 liters per square meter in a short period. Extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 40 liters per square meter cannot be entirely ruled out. Overnight into Saturday, the DWD has issued warnings for increased thunderstorm activity along the northern Lower Rhine and western Münsterland, with expectations of heavy rain, hail, and severe storm gusts.

In some places, stormy gusts and small-grain hail are also likely in the evening.

The outlook for the weekend remains unsettled, with thunderstorms, heavy rain, and gusty winds likely on Sunday, especially in the afternoon and evening. Looking ahead to Monday, the DWD has not excluded the possibility of thunderstorms with heavy rain, potentially reaching "severe weather" levels in some areas. Alongside the stormy conditions, extreme heat is expected to persist, with Friday potentially reaching up to 37 degrees Celsius. The region will continue to experience muggy and hot weather in the coming days.
