Germany: Heatwave Continues with Risk of Severe Thunderstorms

Baden-Württemberg is bracing for a continuation of hot and humid summer conditions, with the German Weather Service (DWD) forecasting temperatures to climb as high as 38 degrees Celsius by Monday. This intense heat brings with it an increased risk of powerful thunderstorms.

The region can expect sunny skies initially, but by afternoon, cumulus clouds will form, particularly over the mountains. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible, with temperatures reaching around 29 degrees in the highlands and up to 34 degrees along the Rhine. Winds will generally be light from the north to northeast, with occasional gusts, and stormy conditions are possible during thunderstorms.

Monday is set to bring another day of significant heat. Overnight, any lingering showers will dissipate, leading to clearer skies. Temperatures will drop to between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius. The day will begin with abundant sunshine, but by afternoon, denser cumulus clouds may develop over the mountains, potentially bringing localized showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures are predicted to reach 32 degrees in the Hotzenwald region and up to 38 degrees on the northern Upper Rhine. Winds will be light from the west, with occasional gusts. Thunderstorms on Monday could also be accompanied by stormy gusts.

Looking ahead to Tuesday, the weather will start clear but will become cloudier throughout the day, with an increase in showers and thunderstorms. The DWD warns of a heightened risk of severe weather in some areas, including heavy and, in isolated cases, extremely heavy rainfall.
