Germany hosts Flag Football World Championship ahead of Olympic debut

Düsseldorf, Germany, is set to become the epicenter of flag football as it hosts the sport's World Championship, approximately two years before its highly anticipated Olympic debut in Los Angeles in 2028.

The championship, featuring 16 men's and 16 women's teams, is not only a battle for the world title but also serves as the first direct qualification tournament for the 2028 Olympic Games. Two berths for both the men's and women's competitions will be awarded in Düsseldorf. In Los Angeles, six teams per gender will compete, with the United States already qualified as the host nation.

Flag football is a non-contact version of American football, played five-on-five. The primary defensive tactic involves pulling a "flag" – a strip of cloth attached to the ball carrier's belt – to stop an opponent's advance, rather than tackling. This fundamental difference distinguishes it from American football, which allows for tackling and requires players to wear protective gear like helmets and shoulder pads. Flag football fields are also smaller, and games are shorter.

Germany's national teams are competitive, with the men's team ranked eleventh and the women's team ninth globally. After a hiatus from international competitions between 2015 and 2021, the German men's team won the European Championship in 2023, though they finished twelfth at the last World Championship. The women's team placed ninth at their last World Championship and secured bronze at the 2023 European Championship.

Favorites for the men's title include the dominant U.S. team, undefeated in World Championship play since 2012, as well as Mexico, Italy, and France. In the women's division, Mexico recently overtook the United States as the top-ranked team, with Great Britain, Canada, and Japan also considered strong contenders.
