Germany opens doors to skilled workers, including from Indonesia

Germany is actively encouraging skilled workers from across the globe, with a particular focus on Indonesia, to immigrate and contribute to its economy. This initiative aims to combat the country's severe demographic challenges and widespread labor shortages, which are impacting Europe's largest economy.

Dr. Martin Bergfelder, Special Representative for Skilled Immigration at the Federal Foreign Office, stated, "Simply put, we want skilled immigration to Germany, and we need it badly." Historically, Germany relied heavily on migration from other European nations, especially Eastern Europe. However, this trend has reversed as those countries now face similar demographic issues and their citizens are returning home, exacerbating Germany's need for foreign talent.

There is a broad political consensus in Germany supporting skilled immigration, with all major political parties recognizing the urgent need. The government is not only seeking highly qualified individuals but also those interested in vocational training or studying in Germany, with the expectation that they will settle and build lives there. To facilitate this, the Federal Foreign Office, in collaboration with agencies like GIZ, the Goethe Institute, and the Chambers of Commerce and Industry (IHK), is disseminating accurate information about opportunities in Germany.

Germany is also improving its immigration bureaucracy through measures like the Work and Stay Agency, which offers a one-stop, digitized service to simplify procedures. Beyond employment, the government is addressing essential needs such as housing, schooling for children, and social integration to ensure newcomers can adapt smoothly. The country also boasts a strong healthcare and social security system, alongside its natural beauty and vibrant cities.
