Germany's 'hunger stones' resurface as rivers hit historic lows

Germany is confronting severe drought conditions, leading to historically low water levels in its major rivers, including the Elbe, Danube, and Rhine. In Saxony, the prolonged absence of rain has caused the Elbe River's water level to drop significantly, bringing "hunger stones" back into view near Pirna.

These "hunger stones" are hydrological landmarks inscribed with dates of previous severe droughts. One stone in the Oberpost area bears over 20 markings, the oldest dating back to 1707. These inscriptions served as warnings to future generations about the potential for crop failures, food shortages, and navigation difficulties when water levels reached such critical lows.

One stark message found on a stone reads, "If you see me, weep." Another stone was marked in 2018, recalling the historically low water levels of that period. Currently, the Elbe's water level near Pirna remains well below one meter, and in Dresden, it has fallen to 54 centimeters. Other rivers in Saxony, such as the Mulde, Weisse Elster, Spree, and Neisse, are also experiencing low water levels.

The situation reflects a broader environmental challenge. German Environment Minister Carsten Schneider stated that the country has lost approximately 60 billion cubic meters of water in the last 25 years, a figure comparable to the volume of Lake Constance. He attributes this loss partly to the increasing frequency of drought periods, exacerbated by factors like extensive concrete surfaces and straightened riverbeds.
