Germany's weather service issues nationwide heat warning

Germany is bracing for extreme heat as the national weather service, the Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD), has issued a widespread heat warning. The alert covers nearly all of the country, with the most intense heat expected in the central, eastern, and southern regions. Only isolated areas in the north and northwest are exempt from the warning.

The DWD issues these warnings when significant heat stress is anticipated, particularly when nighttime temperatures do not offer sufficient cooling. The "felt temperature" is a key metric, with warnings issued if it exceeds 32 degrees Celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit) in the early afternoon. "Extreme heat" is defined as temperatures reaching 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) or higher.

To cope with the soaring temperatures, the DWD recommends avoiding direct sunlight whenever possible and rescheduling strenuous outdoor activities for the cooler morning hours. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, wearing lightweight clothing, and avoiding alcohol are also advised. For indoor comfort, the service suggests protecting living spaces from the sun and ventilating them only after temperatures have dropped.
