Germany to discuss Klopp as new coach after Nagelsmann's World Cup exit

Jürgen Klopp is reportedly in contention to become the next head coach of the German national football team. The German Football Association (DFB) announced it would begin "discussions" with the former Liverpool manager after accepting the immediate resignation of Julian Nagelsmann.

Nagelsmann's contract was set to run until the summer of 2028, but it was terminated following Germany's disappointing performance in the World Cup, where they were eliminated in the round of 16. According to German media, Nagelsmann agreed to step down and will receive a severance package reportedly worth seven million euros.

The DFB's decision comes after a meeting to analyze the reasons behind the team's poor showing. Klopp, who has a highly successful track record with Mainz, Borussia Dortmund, and Liverpool, has allegedly indicated his willingness to consider the role. His departure from Liverpool at the end of the season after nine years marked the end of a highly successful tenure, including ending the club's 30-year wait for an English league title in 2020.

Should an agreement be reached, Klopp would take over a team facing immense challenges. Germany has suffered three consecutive disappointing World Cup campaigns, with group-stage exits in 2018 and 2022, followed by the recent early elimination. Nagelsmann is the second coach in less than three years to not complete his intended mandate, following Hansi Flick's dismissal in September 2023.
