Ghana snatched a last-gasp 1-0 victory against Panama in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup's Group 12, held early Thursday, June 18, at the BMO Field in Toronto. The game, largely devoid of clear-cut chances and exciting play, seemed destined for a draw until Gyamfi scored a dramatic buzzer-beater in the 90+5th minute, securing all three points for the African side.

The first half saw Panama start more assertively, creating the initial notable chance in the second minute. Waterman's shot from the penalty area, following a cross from Murillo, was impressively saved by Zigi. Later, Martinez's cross found Ramos, whose subsequent shot sailed over the bar. Panama held a slight territorial advantage, while Ghana struggled to produce any significant attacking threats.

In the second half, Ghana registered their first shot on target in the 48th minute when Sulemana's cross was met by Adjei, whose header went directly at Mosquera. Panama responded in the 60th minute with Martinez finding space in the box, but his shot hit the outside of the net. Despite the limited action, Ghana's persistence paid off in stoppage time. Asane drove into the box from the left and cut the ball back to Gyamfi, who slotted it home from close range in the 90+5th minute, sealing a crucial opening win. Gyamfi was later named the MVP of the match.
