Ghana football federation reappoints Carlos Queiroz as national team coach

Carlos Queiroz is returning as Ghana’s coach just weeks after saying goodbye to the Black Stars. The Ghana Football Association announced that it had reached an agreement with the 73-year-old Portuguese coach for a new term.

The federation said the appointment followed discussions with the GFA and Ghana’s Ministry of Sports and Recreation. Queiroz will resume his duties with the team’s next international call-up.

The GFA pointed to his “extensive international experience,” technical ability and knowledge of the Black Stars as reasons for bringing him back. His previous agreement began in April and covered Ghana’s participation in the 2026 World Cup.

Under Queiroz, Ghana reached the round of 32 for the first time since 2010, but Colombia eliminated the team with a 1-0 victory. Queiroz posted a farewell message on Instagram in July, saying he closed the chapter with “pride” and the “healthy dissatisfaction” of someone who wanted to go further.

“For the fans, we cannot claim complete sporting satisfaction, but we can proudly say that we honored Ghana’s colors and restored the Black Stars’ respect and credibility on football’s biggest stage,” he wrote. The GFA had previously said it received no formal resignation, while its latest statement said his earlier mandate had ended several weeks ago. Queiroz has also coached Portugal, the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Iran, Colombia, Egypt, Qatar and Oman.
