Ghana government praises Church of Pentecost for sheltering citizens during South Africa attacks

Ghana's government has lauded the Church of Pentecost for its significant humanitarian intervention, offering shelter to over 500 Ghanaians affected by recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the commendation during a visit to the church's leadership, revealing that its branches provided refuge for two months and two weeks. Many Ghanaians initially hoped for an improvement in conditions and did not opt for early evacuation, but the worsening situation left them stranded and in need of assistance. The church provided essential support, including accommodation and food, even suspending some services to make space for the displaced. A final group is scheduled for evacuation soon, after which the church can resume its normal operations. Minister Ablakwa conveyed the deep appreciation of President John Dramani Mahama and the government, emphasizing the church's consistent support during various crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He described the church's actions as a powerful example of national solidarity and humanitarian service, expressing the government's enduring gratitude for their continued assistance to citizens in distress. The Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, acknowledged the recognition and shared harrowing personal experiences from his time in South Africa, including a near-death encounter and theft of his luggage at the airport. He stated that the church's actions were in line with its principles.
