Ghana Grid Company begins power restoration after major fault

Ghana's power supply faced significant disruption early Thursday morning due to a major fault on the Akosombo-Volta transmission line. The incident, which occurred around 4:30 a.m., triggered an automatic shutdown of several generating units at the Akosombo power plant and other thermal power facilities.

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) stated that the shutdown was a protective measure by the power system's mechanisms to prevent further damage and maintain the stability of the national grid. Immediately following the fault, GRIDCo engineers, in collaboration with other power sector agencies, worked to isolate the affected transmission line and initiate restoration procedures.

According to GRIDCo, power has already been successfully restored to some of the affected areas. The company assured the public that efforts are ongoing to ensure a complete restoration of supply to all remaining customers as swiftly and safely as possible. GRIDCo extended an apology to the public for the inconvenience caused by the temporary outage.
