Ghana's NDC Elects New Leaders: Alberta Sunu Vies for Weija-Gbawe Chairmanship

Alberta Sunu, the current Women's Organiser for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ghana's Weija-Gbawe Constituency, has declared her intention to contest the party's constituency chairperson position. Sunu believes her extensive grassroots experience uniquely positions her to unite the party and reclaim the parliamentary seat, which has eluded the NDC for 24 years.

My experience being the women’s organiser in the last four years has given me exposure and experience. It has also made me identify why the NDC in this particular constituency has not gotten an MP for the past 24 years.

She emphasized that her decision to run is not based on personal differences but on a strong conviction that she can bring about a change in the party's fortunes within the constituency.

The constituency executive elections are scheduled for October 24 and 25. Sunu is one of seven individuals who have declared their candidacy, including the incumbent chairman and his predecessor. Notably, she is the only woman among the seven aspirants. Despite this, Sunu expressed confidence, stating, "I am actually very, very happy they are all men because the difference will show that it does not matter how many men you are contesting. Our individual work and contributions to the party will speak."

Sunu highlighted her proactive approach during her tenure as women's organiser, extending her efforts beyond her official duties to support various party activities. She personally funded campaign materials and organized mobilization efforts across all 14 electoral areas. Her work included voter education for first-time voters, particularly in communities and Zongo areas. "I did not limit myself to my office as a women’s organiser. I did what the youth had to do, I did what the treasurer had to do, I did what the chairman had to do and I did what the organiser had to do," she explained. These efforts, she noted, contributed to reducing the NDC's parliamentary deficit in the 2024 general election.
