Ghana's NHIA disburses GHS219.8 million to healthcare providers

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has released GHS219.8 million to healthcare providers across Ghana, aiming to bolster the financial stability of facilities and ensure the continued delivery of quality healthcare services under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

The payment, made on July 1, 2026, addresses a backlog of claims from previous years and vetted claims for services provided up to May 2026. This latest disbursement pushes the total claims paid by the NHIA this year to nearly GHS1.2 billion.

Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, Chief Executive of the NHIA, emphasized the payment's significance in demonstrating the Authority's commitment to timely reimbursements. "This payment reinforces our commitment to strengthening the financial sustainability of the health facilities that serve NHIS members every day," he stated. He added that the NHIA is focused on ensuring all providers, from major hospitals to community-based services, receive prompt and accurate payments.

The NHIA also highlighted that private healthcare facilities received GHS98.24 million (44.69%), public facilities GHS80.86 million (36.78%), and mission/faith-based facilities GHS40.70 million (18.53%) of the total disbursement. The Authority is implementing measures to streamline claims processing, reduce payment delays, and enhance collaboration with providers to achieve Universal Health Coverage.
