Ghana's PURC Commends ECG for Swift Power Restoration After Major Outage

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has officially commended the Ashanti Sub-Transmission Region of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for its swift action in restoring power after a significant outage hit Kumasi on August 6, 2026. The commendation, detailed in a letter from PURC Ashanti Regional Manager Edward Boduah Kingston to ECG's General Manager Kofi Apau Ohenese, highlighted the technical team's dedication.

The outage, which began around 5:46 p.m. on a Thursday, stemmed from a broken high-voltage interconnector at Esereso. This failure caused severe electrical arcing and immediately cut power to numerous residential and commercial areas. Despite the incident occurring outside of normal working hours, the ECG Line Maintenance crew mobilized promptly.

Working through the night under flashlight illumination, field engineers successfully repaired the interconnector. Mr. Kingston lauded the team's "operational discipline" and "determination to work under challenging conditions," noting that their prompt response prevented a prolonged disruption for consumers. He stated their actions reflect ECG's commitment to service under all circumstances.

In response, Mr. Ohenese praised the technical staff for their urgency and dedication to maintaining grid reliability. He emphasized that protecting consumer interests remains ECG's primary operational focus. The incident and subsequent commendation underscore the critical role of reliable power supply and the efforts made to ensure it.
