Giant electricity generator moved to Tunis in major logistical feat

An exceptionally large electricity generator was transported under heavy security and a specially planned route from the port of Menzel Bourguiba to Tunis overnight Saturday into Sunday.

The equipment is headed for the La Mornaguia power generation station, where installation and testing will commence before it becomes operational. The convoy, which captured significant online attention, utilized specialized transport, including low-loader trailers for the heavy industrial equipment.

The successful transfer followed extensive logistical and security preparations. Its appearance on Tunisian roads sparked widespread online discussion, with many questioning the generator's origin, cost, and the reason for its transport from Menzel Bourguiba instead of the closer Radès port.

Some social media users linked the generator's arrival to the country's recurring summer electricity issues, characterized by high demand and supply disruptions. Sources close to the matter indicated the German-made generator requires significant preparation due to its size and technical specifications. Installation and testing at La Mornaguia are expected to take about a month.

This operation takes place as Tunisia's national electricity system faces considerable strain, especially during heatwaves when air conditioner usage spikes demand. Recent weeks have seen power outages in various regions attributed to this exceptional pressure on the grid.
