Giant Killer - Hwange, Jordan, Blackrock - the South Is On the Rise

The Southern Region of Zimbabwe is celebrating a significant achievement in the inaugural Munhumutapa Challenge Cup, with three of its teams – Blackrock, Jordan, and Hwange – reaching the last 16.

The Southern Region is extremely happy and delighted to have three representatives making it to the Round of 16. Besides the Premiership I think we are the only lower division league that has managed to send three or more representatives to the Round of 16, which for us is a big plus.

These teams defied expectations, entering their matches as underdogs and securing victories against more prominent clubs. Hwange defeated Dynamos 1-0, Blackrock overcame Highlanders 5-3 on penalties, and Jordan secured a 3-1 win against Gwanda Pirates. The regional league management expressed immense happiness with these results, seeing them as a validation of the growing standard of football in the region.

It comes on the back of our team's beating some of the biggest teams in Zimbabwe. Hwange managed to beat Dynamos in regulation time. BlackRock overcame Highlanders on penalties. For us, it shows that the standard of the game in the region is not very far from what's happening in the Premiership.

The Southern Region's press release highlighted the pride in having three representatives in the Round of 16, noting it as a "big plus" and potentially the only lower division league with such representation. The victories, especially against historically successful clubs like Dynamos and Highlanders, were particularly celebrated. The region emphasized that these wins demonstrate that the quality of the game in their area is competitive with the top-tier Premiership, showcasing the "quality of the game that we have here."
