Giant monitor lizard on the loose in Northern Italy, search operation underway

An extensive search operation is underway in Northern Italy for a giant monitor lizard that has strayed thousands of kilometers from its native Southeast Asian habitat. The reptile, identified as a Papuan monitor lizard, has been on the loose for several weeks, causing concern among local residents.

The first sightings of the escaped creature emerged in early July in Montichiari, near Lake Garda. A farm worker reportedly spotted the lizard, and two weeks later, on July 17, managed to capture a photograph of the half-meter-long reptile. The image, taken in the beam of a flashlight, shows the monitor lizard staring directly at the camera.

Authorities are warning the public about the potential danger posed by the lizard. While its exact location remains unknown, the creature's venomous bite is considered a serious threat to humans. The search continues as officials work to locate and safely capture the exotic animal before it can cause harm.
