Giants trade stars Ray and Arráez, signaling rebuild as Lee Jung-hoo stays

The San Francisco Giants have signaled a shift towards rebuilding by trading away key players Robbie Ray and Luis Arráez before the MLB trade deadline. The team, currently fourth in the National League West with a 47-65 record, is effectively conceding the current season, trailing the third-place Arizona Diamondbacks by 12 games in the wild card race.

Robbie Ray, a former Cy Young Award winner, was sent to the San Diego Padres in exchange for right-handed pitcher Miguel Mendoza and infielder Jhonny Hernandez. Ray, who boasts a 3.08 ERA this season and had particularly strong performances in June and July, is seen as a crucial addition for the Padres' wild card push.

Luis Arráez, a three-time batting champion, was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies along with pitcher Caleb Killian. Arráez leads the National League with a .324 batting average this season. The Phillies, currently second in the NL East and holding a wild card spot, could benefit from his offensive prowess. The Giants received pitching prospect Ramon Marte and catcher Matheu Geren in this deal.

Both Ray and Arráez were nearing the end of their contracts and would have become free agents after the season. The Giants appear to have prioritized maximizing their value through trades rather than risking losing them without compensation.
