Gilbert scores in pre-season opener for Baník Ostrava

Trinidad and Tobago forward Dantaye Gilbert has opened his scoring account for his new club, FC Baník Ostrava. Gilbert netted the opening goal in the 17th minute of a pre-season friendly against Slovakian club AS Trenčín. However, his early strike could not prevent a 3-2 defeat for the Czech First League side as they continue preparations for the new campaign.

Gilbert, 21, recently signed a three-year contract with Baník Ostrava, keeping him at the club until June 30, 2029. He joined from fellow Czech club Dukla Prague. Baník's sporting director, Luděk Mikloško, expressed optimism about Gilbert's potential, noting his height, speed, and versatility. "He has height, but he is also quick, and he can play in several positions. We will continue to work with him and believe that he is a player whom we can develop even further and improve in terms of performance," Mikloško stated on the club’s website.

Gilbert himself was drawn to Baník after considering several offers within the Czech league. "I felt that it would suit me the most. I spoke to the sports director on the phone, who described to me what plans they had for me, and I actually made up my mind quickly," he said. Baník Ostrava will begin its domestic season on Saturday against Zlín.
