Girl jumps off Faridabad school roof, dies; dad says made to stand in sun for hours

A 16-year-old Class 11 student allegedly died by suicide after jumping from the third-floor terrace of Navodaya Vidya Niketan Senior Secondary School on Dabua-Gazipur Road in Faridabad on Tuesday, police said. The incident took place around 1.30pm, after classes had ended and students were leaving the school.

School staff took the girl to Badshah Khan Civil Hospital, where doctors declared her dead from injuries sustained in the fall. Police said she had first been taken to a private hospital near the school, but staff there directed the school to take her to the civil hospital because the case involved police.

The girl’s father alleged that a female teacher punished his daughter by making her stand in the sun for at least four hours. He said classmates told him that the punishment followed a disturbance in class involving some students. “One of the female teachers in the school had punished her by making her stand in the sun for at least four hours because some students had created some ruckus in class,” he told Hindustan Times.

The father said the school should have contacted him instead of imposing what he called a harsh punishment. He also alleged that the administration alerted him about the incident after a delay of nearly an hour. Faridabad police public relations officer Yashpal Yadav said the allegations were being verified and that police would register a case after the father submitted a formal complaint.

The school rejected the allegations. Principal RK Sharma said the student had gone to the bathroom with a female non-teaching staff member, then went to the terrace and jumped suddenly. “We don’t know why she took such a step,” he said. Police are questioning school authorities and examining CCTV footage. The report also recalls a separate case in Jaipur last November, when a Class 4 student allegedly died by suicide after her family accused the school of failing to act on bullying complaints.
