Girls' N1 Tournament Underway in Akureyri

Akureyri, Iceland is hosting the second annual N1 girls' football tournament, drawing 700 young players aged nine to ten from across the country. The event, which began Friday and concludes Sunday, is designed to offer more than just athletic competition.

Sævar Pétursson, CEO of the Akureyri Football Club (KA), highlighted the tournament's expansion to include girls, responding to community demand for parallel events for both genders. "We started the girls' tournament last year and are now doing it for the second time, just to meet what the community is calling for – that there are tournaments for both boys and girls," he said.

The tournament's scope extends beyond the football pitch. "It's not just about football," Pétursson explained. "We go to the cinema and swimming, and there are concerts here with Aron Can, so it's a real experience and should be about much more than just football. It's about coming and having fun with friends."

Organizers aim to create unique memories for the young participants and their families. "It's really fun and done to create slightly different memories than just showing up and competing in football," Pétursson noted. "After ten years, many kids might remember the sleepover at school or the cinema trip more than perhaps exactly how the football match went."
