Gironde Wildfire 'Stabilized' but Not 'Fixed,' Warns Interior Minister Amid Heatwave Fears

A massive wildfire that has ravaged 42,000 hectares near Bordeaux has been "stabilized" but remains "not fixed," according to French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez. Speaking after a cabinet meeting, Nunez stressed the need for "extreme caution," noting that while the fire did not spread overnight, this respite could be short-lived. Authorities are concerned that an approaching heatwave, expected to arrive Tuesday, could reignite the flames and lead to further escalation.

Nunez described the overall fire situation in France this year as "exceptional," with 115,000 hectares burned nationwide since January 1. He made these remarks during a press conference following the Council of Ministers meeting, where the ongoing efforts to combat the blazes were discussed. The minister's cautious tone reflects the persistent threat posed by the fires, despite the temporary stabilization in the Gironde region.

The fire, located in the pines of Croix d’Hins in Marcheprime, has devastated a significant swathe of forest. While the immediate progression has been halted, the underlying smoldering and the potential for reignition due to high temperatures present a continued challenge for firefighters. The focus remains on containment and preventing further spread, especially as weather conditions are predicted to become more unfavorable.
