What was initially reported as an earthquake in Nepal and Tibet has been confirmed by the US Geological Survey (USGS) to be a catastrophic glacial collapse and debris flow. The event, which occurred early Wednesday, unleashed torrents of water and debris, resulting in at least 160 fatalities and hundreds of people still missing in both regions.

The USGS stated that seismic activity initially detected was not an earthquake but a consequence of the glacial collapse. Advanced analysis of seismic data and satellite imagery led the agency to determine that a magnitude 5.2 seismic event near the Nepal-China border was actually caused by the glacial collapse and subsequent debris flow. Earlier reports had suggested a magnitude 4.4 earthquake.
