Glacier melt reveals climber's gear 63 years after Austrian accident

A melting glacier in the Austrian Alps has returned a piece of history to a Bavarian man, revealing climbing gear lost over six decades ago. The equipment, discovered in July on the Sulztalferner glacier at nearly 3,000 meters, included a backpack, ice axe, camera, and pipe, all appearing heavily weathered.

Police investigations were launched to determine if the items were linked to a mountain accident. Among the findings was a damaged map with a barely legible name, which, after further research, was identified as an 86-year-old man from the Regensburg district.

The man recalled the dramatic events of August 1963 when he and friends were on a mountain tour. During a glacier crossing, he fell into an ice crevasse. Secured by a rope, he was held by his companions and managed to free himself. In an effort to lighten the load during his rescue, he discarded his backpack into the crevasse.

This week, the recovered gear was handed over to the man's son in Neustift im Stubaital, as the 86-year-old was unable to travel due to health reasons. The son shared with the police the profound personal significance of the find, stating that without his father's survival of that 1963 accident, their family would not exist today.
