Glasgow Hailed for Successful Commonwealth Games as Baton Passes to Amdavad

The 2026 Commonwealth Games officially concluded in Glasgow on Sunday night, marked by a vibrant closing ceremony that celebrated the athletes' achievements and passed the torch to the next host city, Amdavad, India, for the 2030 edition.

Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, formally closed the event, emphasizing the quadrennial gathering's role in celebrating the Commonwealth through sport. He commended participants for embodying the Commonwealth's spirit and values, inspiring both current attendees and future generations.

Thanks to the manner, style and enthusiasm with which you have competed, officiated, supported, organised and volunteered, you have, once again, brought the spirit and values of the Commonwealth to life. You have inspired us and hopefully future generations.

The handover ceremony saw the official baton passed to Amdavad, with Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra assisting in the flag transfer. Deputy Chief Minister of Gujarat, Harsh Sanghavi, accepted the responsibility, expressing readiness and highlighting Amdavad's compact, well-connected, and vibrant nature, promising an excellent experience for visitors.

Commonwealth Sport CEO Katie Sadleir indicated that Amdavad 2030 is expected to feature 15 to 17 sports. Reflecting on the recently concluded Games, Glasgow 2026 CEO Phil Batty noted the event's success after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew its hosting bid. The reimagined Games successfully hosted 3,000 athletes in 215 medal events across 10 sports, attracting 434,000 ticketed spectators and setting a new blueprint for future events.
